A Core Lab Technical Specialist is a highly skilled health professional who performs all the duties of a Medical Technologist with additional responsibilities including assisting in the planning, organizing, technical operations and coordinating of the technical and administrative activities for the Core Lab and Blood Bank and for providing support in development, implementation, and continuous improvements.


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and test specimens, including proficiency testing and manual procedures, and report appropriately according to protocol. Monitors proficiency testing, ensuring all staff participate and demonstrate acceptable results. Investigates results that are not in acceptable limits. *
  • Functions as a leader and educator to lab staff, providing technical consultation and coordinating adequate schedule coverage on all shifts. Assists in the selection of and training/competency of employees.
  • Performs and monitors quality control and instrument functions. Takes corrective action as needed and assists in validation of new lot and controls. Submits peer data. *
  • Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities and maintain inter-and intra-departmental work flow by cooperating with others. Hears and helps to resolve complaints from staff and providers. Ensures compliance with regulatory Recommends changes, initiates corrective or preventative actions, when appropriate, and monitors effectiveness.
  • Coordinates analyzer linearity and correlation testing, assisting with the initial validation and ongoing regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains adequate inventory and conserves resources.
  • Writes or revises procedures, as needed.
  • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot complex equipment.
  • Utilize complex information systems; collect and interpret data.
  • Is flexible in assuming additional responsibilities as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology (or equivalent) and Registered as a Medical Technologist/Clinical Lab Scientist by American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent.
  • Licensure: Meets NYS Department of Health requirements and is currently licensed as a Clinical Lab Scientist.
  • Experience: Four years of prior laboratory experience is required. NYS Supervisory eligible is preferred.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Problem solving ability, investigative technique and attention to detail
  • Good written and oral communication skills preferred
  • Requires ability to prioritize work, manage time wisely and adjust to changes in work volumes

Physical Requirements:

  • Repetitive use of hands (eg. computer keyboard usage), sitting, walking or standing for long periods of time is often necessary; must be able to physically operate automation used in the job.
  • May require lifting (up to 30 Lbs.) and carrying supplies.

Location and Travel Requirements:

  • Onsite at Cayuga Health Center: 101 Dates Dr, Ithaca, NY 14850
  • Shift: Full-Time, Days FLEX, 37.5 hrs per week. Ability to work occasional weekends and rotating holidays, as required.
  • 0%-5% Travel can be expected in this role

Pay Range Disclosure:

  • Standard Rate of $38.75 to $52.50 per hour plus benefits
