The Endoscopy Technical Specialist Team Leader provides leadership and advanced technical expertise to support safe, efficient, and high-quality gastrointestinal procedures. This role oversees daily technical operations of the Endoscopy Unit, supervises and mentors endoscopy technicians, and serves as a clinical and technical resource for providers and nursing staff. The Team Leader ensures compliance with SGNA, AAMI, CDC, and regulatory standards; maintains equipment, scope, and supply readiness; and collaborates with Sterile Processing, Anesthesia, Biomed, and other departments to optimize patient care and workflow.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Leadership & Workflow Coordination
- Lead, coach, and mentor endoscopy technicians, providing onboarding, training, and ongoing skill development.
- Coordinate daily technician assignments, room coverage, breaks, lunches, and procedure flow to support on-time starts and minimize delays.
- Maintain technician schedules, including on-call coverage.
- Collaborate with the charge nurse and providers to adjust staffing based on patient acuity, add-on cases, procedural complexity, and equipment needs.
- Ensure emergency equipment, scopes, supplies, and advanced devices are stocked, functional, and readily available.
Clinical & Technical Support
- Assist during advanced and complex endoscopic procedures, serving as the primary technical resource.
- Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs with Biomed and external vendors.
- Partner with Sterile Processing to ensure scopes undergo appropriate leak testing, high-level disinfection, storage, and documentation in accordance with AAMI ST91 and SGNA standards.
- Oversee specimen handling, device tracking, quality indicators, and equipment logs.
Team Management
- Participate in hiring, onboarding, performance evaluation, and coaching of endoscopy technicians.
- Conduct competency validations and maintain required training and certification documentation.
- Identify workflow improvement opportunities and support leadership with policy development and implementation.
Core Competencies
Assessment
- Assess procedure room readiness, equipment functionality, and scope integrity prior to each case.
- Evaluate staff competency, learning needs, and performance concerns.
- Identify and address patient safety risks during procedures.
- Monitor supply levels, expiration dates, and inventory trends.
Implementation
- Implement daily assignments, quality standards, and unit policies.
- Provide advanced technical support during procedures, including electrocautery assistance, advanced device operation, and therapeutic interventions.
- Coordinate orientation and training plans for new technicians.
Evaluation
- Evaluate staff performance and procedural competency; document concerns and communicate with leadership.
- Collaborate with Sterile Processing to ensure audits of reprocessing logs, scope tracking, and quality metrics are completed.
- Monitor room turnover times, equipment readiness, and supply availability.
- Evaluate workflow efficiency and recommend process improvements.
Risk Management & Safety
- Ensure compliance with SGNA, CDC, OSHA, AORN, and AAMI ST91 standards.
- Oversee the safe use of electrosurgical devices, CO₂ insufflators, cautery systems, and endoscopic accessories.
- Report safety events, near misses, and equipment failures; participate in root cause analysis as appropriate.
- Support procedural and sedation safety through equipment checks and recognition of patient deterioration.
Information Management
- Maintain accurate scope tracking records, high-level disinfection logs, quality indicators, and equipment maintenance documentation in collaboration with Sterile Processing.
- Protect patient privacy and device traceability in compliance with HIPAA.
- Track staff competencies, training dates, and certification records
Judgment
- Demonstrate sound clinical and operational judgment during emergencies, equipment failures, case delays, and supply shortages.
- Prioritize tasks based on patient acuity, procedural urgency, and operational impact.
- Assign technicians based on skill level, experience, and case complexity.
- Recognize when to escalate issues to the charge nurse, manager, Sterile Processing, Biomed, or Anesthesia.
Professional Development
- Participate in continuing education through SGNA, AAMI, and hospital-sponsored programs.
- Maintain advanced competency in new endoscopic equipment and emerging GI technologies.
- Engage in leadership development, mentorship, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Pursue specialty certification such as Advanced Gastroenterology Technical Specialist (AGTS) or equivalent.
- Stay current with regulatory standards, guidelines, and evidence-based practice.
Education & Experience Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Endoscopy Technician certification required; AGTS certification preferred.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience as an Endoscopy Technician; advanced GI and ERCP experience strongly preferred.
- Prior leadership, preceptor, or charge experience preferred.
- BLS required; ACLS preferred based on facility requirements.
- Demonstrated knowledge of GI equipment, infection prevention, reprocessing standards, and advanced endoscopic procedures.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of a fast-paced endoscopy environment, including lifting equipment, assisting with patient positioning, and prolonged standing.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent hand and finger use (e.g., to operate a computer keyboard).
- Lifting and carrying items up to 20 lbs. (e.g., boxes, equipment), with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to stoop, kneel, or crouch for tasks such as retrieving items from lower shelves or filing in low drawers.
- Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods, as the position may require.
- Capacity to operate job-related equipment, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Location and Travel Requirements:
- Onsite at Cayuga Medical Center- 101 Dates Drive, Ithaca, NY 14850
- Will cover main campus, CEC, and Surgicare in the future
- Shift: Days
- Travel can be expected in this role when covering all 3 locations
Pay Range Disclosure:
Standard Rate of $27.23 per hour
