Staff Pharmacists/Outpatient fill prescriptions for medications, monitor patient medication therapies, provide drug information, and supervises direct support personnel. In the absence of the Specialty/Outpatient Pharmacy Manager, a staff pharmacist/outpatient may be required to assume the essential responsibilities and perform the duties of the Manager were appropriate. The Staff/Outpatient Pharmacist may also support the benefits investigation team in seeking prior authorization for select high-cost medications where appropriate, in order to optimize Outpatient Pharmacy efficiency as well as enhance patient care and satisfaction.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Prepares and dispenses prescription medications and OTC products.
- Communicates with providers to ensure safety and accuracy.
- Provides excellent customer service.
- Delivers consultative services to patients on proper medication use.
- Assists in supervising and training of pharmacy support staff.
- Complies with all New York State and Federal regulations.
- Optimally manages pharmacy inventory and demonstrates understanding of storage and handling requirements that select medications may require.
- Ensures proper reimbursement from third party payers.
- Supports the technical staff as they conduct patient insurance, benefits and financial investigation and verification, and ensures it is directly communicated with patients.
- Demonstrates an understanding of the prior authorization and insurance approval process that certain medications require and alerts ambulatory pharmacists of denials or nonresponses, where appropriate.
- Facilitates communication and cooperation between all individuals involved in the medication management process in order to assure the accurate, timely and uninterrupted provision of pharmaceutical care.
- Promotes patient adherence by assisting with calls to patients, documenting patient responses and appropriately triaging patient problems, where appropriate.
- Reviews and resolves documented patient complaints with the Pharmacy Manager when necessary.
- Supports the pharmacy management team in developing marketing materials and communication strategies to increase patient recruitment and prescription capture of high-cost take-home medications.
- Is flexible in assuming other appropriate responsibilities not noted above.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Education - Graduate of an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy with either a BS in Pharmacy or PharmD required.
- Experience - Retail pharmacy experience preferred but not required.
- Licensure - Currently licensed in the State of New York. Must be certified immunizer in New York.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Problem solving ability and attention to detail is preferred
- Good written and oral communication skills preferred.
- Requires ability to prioritize work, manage time wisely and adjust to changes in work volumes.
Physical Requirements:
- Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., use of computer keyboard)
- May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs.), including boxes, equipment, and stooping and kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers)
- Sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours) is often necessary; must be able physically to operate the equipment used for the job.
Location and Travel Requirements:
- Onsite at Cayuga Medical Center: 201 Dates Drive, Suite 109, Ithaca NY 14850
- Shift: Per Diem. Various Shifts as Scheduled. Anticipated Coverage M-F: 7am-3:30pm or 8:30am-5pm and
Sat: 7am-3pm. Flexibility to support holiday coverage. - 0%-5% Travel can be expected in this role
Pay Range Disclosure:
- Standard Rate of $55.48 to $75.00 per hour
