Job Description


Job Title: Staff Accountant


Purpose: The Staff Accountant is responsible for providing accounting and financial support to the Accounting Department. The primary job responsibility of the Staff Accountant is the oversight of the organization's accounting functions, which includes primarily cash, accounts receivable, bank and account reconciliations and journal entries. This person will be responsible for monthly journal entries and adherence to internal controls. The Staff Accountant will assist the Senior Accountant in the preparation of financial statements, reports and analysis as needed.


Reports to: Senior Accountant


Essential Job Functions:

  • Responsible for all cash functions, including daily banking duties and reconciliations.
  • Creates settlement runs as needed in collaboration with Finance and Treasury to ensure timely supplier payments.
  • Manage and reconcile all general ledger accounts as directed.
  • Responsible for processing, billing and receipts of miscellaneous Accounts Receivable; including patient refunds.
  • Ensure appropriate recording of business expenses and revenues, with knowledge of the accrual method of accounting.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements; creating journal entries and accounting reports as needed.
  • Responsible for oversight and completion of cash audits.
  • Completes daily reconciliation of cash between the EMR and bank transactions while collaborating with revenue cycle staff to ensure all cash is accounted for in the correct period.
  • Assists with accounting analysis as needed.
  • Aid in the formation and maintenance of CHS Finance / Accounting policies.
  • Ensures appropriate controls are adhered to by assuming responsibility for effectively researching, tracking and resolving accounting or documentation issues and discrepancies.
  • Communicates effectively with other departments to obtain and convey information and/or to correct transactions.
  • Keeps management informed of area activities and of any significant problems.
  • Attends and participates in meetings as required.
  • Ensures that work area is clean, secure, well maintained and organized.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Microsoft Office products specifically Excel
  • Accounting system software experience preferred (Workday, NetSuite, Sorian)
  • Capable of generating clear and organized reports in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • High degree of professionalism and confidentiality required
  • Considerable knowledge of bookkeeping practices, techniques, and terminology.
  • Considerable knowledge of basic accounting principles and practices, with the ability to record financial transactions of a business in accordance with GAAP.
  • Individual needs to be detail oriented, organized and able to adapt to a rapidly growing organization.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma and three years of experience in bookkeeping or field related to clerical accounting
  • College level training in bookkeeping or accounting is desirable;
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
