The Steam Plant Technician is responsible for operation and maintenance of high pressure, gas and oil-fired steam boilers. The operator will complete required record keeping as necessary for the plant and equipment. This position differs from the steam plant operator by a minimum of (3) years' experience in the medical center plant or equivalent experience. This job may provide leadership under the guidance of the Facility Manager in the absence of the lead Steam Plant Technician.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates strong leadership in emergency response by understanding and guiding staff in emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation protocols, and disaster response, ensuring clarity of roles during a fire.
  • Fosters a culture of safety by actively identifying and addressing unsafe conditions in the workplace, setting an example for the team to follow in maintaining a safe environment.

  • Leads by example in maintaining a clean and safe work area daily, setting a high standard for others to ensure compliance with safety and cleanliness protocols.

  • Promotes infection control and universal precautions, exceeding expectations by providing staff with proper training in spill response and safe handling of transported items.

  • Prioritizes customer service by carrying out duties in a professional and safe manner, ensuring that there are no substantiated complaints from patients, physicians, or staff.

  • Guides team members in proper lifting techniques and safety practices, anticipating potential hazards and taking proactive actions to prevent injuries and safety issues.

  • Takes initiative in managing equipment safety by ensuring proper lock-out/tag-out procedures are followed and leading efforts to repair and maintain equipment, demonstrating commitment to operational safety.

  • Leads projects and initiatives related to steam, water, and gas systems, offering input on energy efficiency upgrades to reduce utility costs and improve system performance.

  • Mentors and develops staff skills by creating and overseeing training plans, ensuring ongoing skill compliance, and effectively leading teams in resolving technical issues with steam and condensate return systems.

  • Drives continuous improvement by recommending system upgrades and replacements, leading efforts to design more efficient systems, and ensuring all operations comply with fire safety codes and regulations.

Required Skills and Experience


  • Education - High School Diploma / GED
  • Experience - Ability to operate high pressure boiler systems. Recommended is a minimum three years' experience in operating high-pressure boilers.
  • Licensure - A clean valid NYS Driver's license.

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires the ability to lift objects. The physical ability to rapidly respond to equipment failures within the plant is required. Work may include climbing ladders and working from heights above the boilers. The candidate will have the ability to work inside the plant with a warmer than normal environment which is not air conditioned. Good communication skills and the ability to work independently are required for this position.

Pay Range Disclosure

  • $31.90 to $40.70 per hour
